How URL encoding works

URL encoding represents characters using percent-encoded bytes. For example, a space becomes %20.

EncodeURIComponent is useful for individual URL components, such as search parameter values. It also encodes reserved URL separators like &, =, and /. To encode an entire URL while preserving its structure, encode the individual components instead.

Decoding converts valid percent-encoded sequences back to text. Invalid percent sequences or malformed encoded UTF-8 cause an error.

Tip: To encode a search parameter value, enter only its value, such ashello world, rather than the entire URL. Encoding is performed locally in your browser.
